Principal Race Officer Ted Anderson set a one nautical mile course off Bar Beach, just south of Newcastle Beach for the first four races of the Farr 40 One Design Trophy.

Reigning World Corinthian Champion Jeff Carter and team Edake proved their offshore experience and with consistent scores of 2.2.2.2 motored back into the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club proudly flying boat of the day and regatta leader battle flags.

The first race was won by Rob Reynold’s Exile in a 5-8 knot south easterly before local knowledge came into play with Newcastle based Joe de Kock and the Good Form crew showing the fleet how it’s done winning race two.

Silver Olympic medallist, Will Ryan was on Main for Good Form and is happy to be back sailing in the Class.

“I’ve sailed many times in the Farr 40 Class, mostly with Sam Hill on Forty.  Joe (de Kock) looks after my grandfather’s yacht and asked me if I was available.  I’m normally not around Newcastle, but this weekend worked for me.”

Ryan joked, “I called Sam to make sure it was okay for me to defect to Good Form and he said that would be alright.”

Ryan and Mat Belcher recently won their third consecutive 470 gold medal on the Toyko 2020 Olympic waters at the Hempel World Cup Series Enoshima event in Japan.  The dynamic due have just been selected for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and are looking like the hot favourites for gold.

Tom and Alan Quick’s Outlaw eased into today’s racing scoring two fourth places and finished the day with two consecutive wins placing them straight onto the leaderboard in second place overall, just two points behind regatta leader Edake.

The fleet arrived back at the marina early where they enjoyed sundowners and a sit down dinner on the veranda of the NCYC Sailing Office overlooking Newcastle’s working harbour.

Podium positions are tight going into tomorrow’s racing commencing at 11am with up to four races.
