Event: 2016 Rolex Farr 40 World Championship, 16-19 February hosted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron
Plenty of action on day two
Day two of the 2016 Rolex Farr 40 World Championships took place today inside Sydney Harbour between Clifton Gardens and Rose Bay with a moderate sou’- south easterly averaging 12 knots, gusting up to 17 knots later in the afternoon. Three two-lappers were raced, which resulted in some considerable changes to the scoreboard.
Whilst Plenty is still number one, the Australian teams are closing in and there is just one point separating first, second and third places.
Guido Belgiorno-Nettis’ Transfusion won the final race of the day and is now sitting comfortably in third place, just two points behind Plenty.
Transfusion Tactician John Kostecki is happy with today’s results (2-3-1), however, knows how quickly things can change in one design racing especially at World Championship level. With two days to go and up to five more races, anything can happen. “It was a good day and nice to win the last race. We are always trying to improve as a team, so we continue to de-brief daily. I think out of Plenty, Flash Gordon, Struntje and ourselves, it seems like the crew who can put it all together from starting well to having good speed and staying out of trouble will win this championship.”
Jeff Carter and the Edake crew remain the leading Corinthian team and hold their position of joint fourth overall leading Kokomo on 35 points.
Race 6 provided unlimited action for spectators starting with a general recall, followed by interruption from a submarine and an almighty crash between Struntje Light and an 18 footer. Struntje Skipper Wolfgang Schaefer was deeply disappointed to retire from the race and having to carry 13 points pushing him down the scoreboard to sixth place.
Gordon Ketelbey and the Zen crew made an almighty comeback in the last race of the day scoring a fourth, showing the talented Corinthian team has what it takes to mix it with the professional teams. “At last we are stepping forward, let’s hope the momentum continues. It would be great to close in some points on Double Black over the next two days and achieve more consistency.”
Day 3 of the 2016 Rolex Farr 40 World Championships will commence at 1200 hrs tomorrow, Thursday, 18 February 2016.
